The Dominican Republic

.
The Dominican Republic is just a small step from Cuba, its most famous neighbour in the Caribbean sea. It is a mountainous island that rises to over 3000m which is mostly visited for its long white sandy beaches.
.
Under the influence of trade winds, it classically offers two different sides, the windside of the island is a green, wet and tropical landscape, where generous and exotic flora, banana and tabacco crops flourish along with the major tourist resorts. In the South, the leeside, a drier climate and semi-arid landscapes. Hispanic unlike Haiti, its Latin character expresses itself through music and dance.
.
The atmosphere and sense of  flight can be rhythmical; four mountain ranges traverse the island from East to West through these two different climates zones and offer a dozen flying sites. The height and the orientation of these mountain chains, their interaction with the winds and airmass create micro climates, each having its own uniqueness, charm and varied flight conditions, from powerful thermals in the southern semi desert zones to mellower conditions in the center of the island, and laminar wind on the coast to admire the sea. The trip is run and hosted by French adventure pilot Manu Bonte who as well as being an adventure pilot is also an APPI master instructor (appifly.org).
.
Luxurious mountain flights landing on the beach are also possible.

.

The island also holds a great potential for XC flights in the central mountain range with its beautiful mountainous lines of around sixty kilometers.

.

The country is slightly larger than Switzerland which makes it a vast playground; we’ll focus on the Western areas away from the mass tourism. We will begin in the north around Jarabacoa, a little village, its gentle hills and welcoming plains at the foot of the Cordillera Central. From there we will then move southward to the drier climate zones and to take   advantage of more convenient XC sites which are more open and with higher cloud base… and sea view! The 2004 pre-PWC comp took place here; there hidden marvels, beaches, waterfalls, rivers, salt marshes, inner lakes all waiting for us to complete the exploration of this island.
